January 20th: History in the Making

Yesterday was Inauguration Day.

It was the first time in my short lifetime, and I'd venture to say in most Americans' lifetimes, that the event held such relevance. Living in DC, there was no question that I had to be a part of this inspiring, monumental event.

Hype aside, I could not be more proud. Finally, in the highest office of my country, there stands someone that, for the first time, I feel captures what America and its legacy represent.
A son of an immigrant, raised unconventionally and tied to so many- both internationally and domestically. In Barack Obama, so many can see glimpses of themselves.

Through hard work and self-realization, before us stands a man who has embraced his complicated identity but refuses to apologize or be pigeonholed for it.

Charismatic, confident, diplomatic- he embodies so many noble characteristics that he took upon himself to cultivate. Barack Obama is not only conventionally intelligent, but often more importantly, emotionally intelligent. Attuned to the people, he is able to deliver his message of change in a way that not only reflects reality but reenergizes people to once again hope and to continue to strive.

Many criticize the awe and fanfare which he has received during this past year, but I would choose this reception over one of the typical apathy. Even before entering office he has done more to reenergize the political process and make it more accessible than most presidencies in recent decades. True, he is no savior, no mortal man is, but he is a symbol that while ceilings do exist, with perseverence, they can be lifted- and people will be willing to help you lift them. Excuses don't really seem to work anymore- for where there is a will, there is always a way.

I am ready for change. It took adversity to prepare me to embrace that change personally, but I could not be more ready. While it is a struggle to shake off learned helplessness and retrain myself both mentally and in action- I refuse to be anything but the best I can be. For failed potential is almost more saddening than failure.

Every day is a choice. Every day is an opportunity. With the right attitude we can take it upon ourselves to bring positive change to our lives and to the universe. Through our positive energy and our refusal to demand anything but the best for ourselves we can help our President to reinvigorate America. To bring it into the new century and make it the country we know that it can be.
